TurnKey Vanilla Live CD is a free and open source distribution of Linux designed from the ground up to be used as an appliance for effortlessly deploying dedicated server machines with the Vanilla forum software.
Distributed as 32 and 64-bit Live CDs
The project is distributed as Live CD ISO images and it's based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system. Vanilla is an open source web-based application that allows anyone to easily create community forums.
The ISO images contain the Postfix, Apache, Webmin, MySQL, phpMyAdmin and SSH open source technologies, and can be used from USB flash drives or CD discs. Both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures are supported at this time.
Virtual appliances are also available for download
In addition to the Live CDs, this TurnKey edition is distributed as ready-to-use virtual machines in the OVF, Xen, OpenNode, OpenVZ and OpenStack formats, available for download from the project's homepage.
It comes with all the upstream Vanilla configurations, which are installed to /var/www/vanilla, support for SSL connections, phpMyAdmin for the administration of the MySQL database server, which listens on port 12322 vis SSL, Postfix email server for sending emails, and Webmin modules for configuring Apache2, MySQL, PHP and Postfix.
Getting started with TurnKey Vanilla Live CD
While the default Vanilla username is admin, the default username for the SSH, Webmin, MySQL and phpMyAdmin components is root. The distro allows users to change the root (system administrator) password, as well as the passwords for the MySQL 'root' account and Vanilla 'admin' account straight from the first boot configuration wizard.
In addition, you must add a valid email address for the Vanilla 'admin' account, and initialize the TurnKey Dynamic DNS, Migration, Backup and Domain Management services. At the end of the setup process, you will be able to see the IP addresses and ports for accessing the Vanilla web interface and shell, the phpMyAdmin and Webmin front-ends, as well as the SFTP and SSH accounts.
