TurnKey PunBB Live CD is an open source operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux and designed from the ground up as an easy-to-use appliance for deploying dedicated server machines with the PunBB web-based application.
PunBB is an open source, lightweight and fast PHP-powered discussion board. It is smaller and includes less features than other forum applications, but it's extremely fast. The appliance includes all of the upstream PunBB configurations, which are installed by default in /var/www/punbb.
Key features include support for secure connections using the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) specification, a Postfix mail server for sending emails to users, the phpMyAdmin software for administering the MySQL database server, as well as various Webmin modules for configuring PHP, MySQL, Postfix and Apache.
While the default username for the MySQL, Webmin, Postfix and SSH components is root, the default PunBB username is admin. During the first boot process, users will be able to set a password for the root (system administrator) account, a password for the MySQL 'root' account, and a password for the PunBB 'admin' account.
The project is distributed as Live CD ISO images, which are engineered to support the 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (amd64) architectures. They can be deployed to either USB flash drives or CD discs and used for installing the operating system to a local disk drive, or just trying it without installing anything on their PCs.
In addition to the Live CDs, the appliance is available for download as ready-to-use virtual images in the OpenNode, OVF, Xen, OpenStack and OpenVZ formats, straight from the project's homepage (see above).
The installation process takes only a few minutes and requires users to partition the disk drive and set up the boot loader. After the installation process, you can write down the IP addresses and ports of the active services.
