TurnKey AppEngine Java Live CD is a free and open source software appliance designed from the ground for people who are looking for a straightforward and easy-to-use solution for deploying dedicated Google App Engine Java servers with minimum effort and without paying for expensive products.
Google AppEngine Java SDK is an open source development framework that helps Java developers to build Java web applications, which can be hosted on Google's AppEngine platform. The appliance is based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux operating system.
Key features include all of the upstream Google AppEngine SDK configurations, which are installed by default in /var/www/google_appengine and pre-configured to use the OpenJDK Java runtime environment, Apache Ant for building java applications and Google Web Toolkit (GWT).
In addition, the appliance comes with a Postfix MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) for sending email messages to users, such as password recovery, a Webmin module for configuring the Postfix mail server, and the TurnKey Web Control panel, which includes offline documentation and other useful information.
This TurnKey appliance is distributed as Live CD ISO images and virtual machine images. While the Live CDs will run under both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, the VMs only support the amd64 hardware platform.
Users can use the Live CDs to install the operating system or just try the appliance without installing anything on their computers. On the other hand, the virtual images are designed for the OpenVZ, OVF, OpenNode, OpenStack and Xen virtualization technologies.
When using this appliance, the user should keep in mind that the default username for the SSH and Webmin components is root, and that the Postfix mail server is bound to localhost. The Live CD installation process takes only a few minutes and requires users to choose a disk partitioning method and where to install the boot loader.
