Ramone Linux GNOME

Ramone Linux is an open source and freely distributed operating system built from scratch using the LFS (Linux From Scratch) project. The Ramone Linux GNOME edition features the GNOME desktop environment.

Available for download as 64-bit and 32-bit Live CDs

This is the main edition of Ramone Linux and it is available for download as two Live CD ISO images, one for each of the supported hardware platforms (32-bit/i686 and 64-bit/x86_64).

The user must burn these ISO images onto blank CD discs or write them on USB flash drives of 1GB or higher capacity in order to boot them from the BIOS of a computer.

Non-existent boot menu

Both ISO images have no boot menu, which means that they have been engineered to automatically boot the live environment with default boot options, without user interaction.

Modern and productive desktop environment powered by GNOME

As its name suggests, Ramone Linux GNOME uses GNOME as its default and only desktop environment. It comprises of a top panel for quick access to pre-installed applications, as well as to interact with running programs or cycle between virtual workspaces.

Includes a minimal set of open source applications

The distribution tries to keep things simple and it includes a minimal set of open source applications, among which we can mention the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Gedit text editor, Cheese webcam viewer and Brasero CD/DVD burning software.

Bottom line

Ramone Linux uses RPM as the default package manager and allows users to use command-line tools like yum and mock to install and remove packages. While GNOME is the default desktop environment in this Ramone Linux edition, it is also possible to install the Xfce or LXDE desktop environments. However, there is also a KDE edition of this Linux distribution, available for download on Softoware.
