PapugLinux LiveCD is a free and open source Linux kernel-based operating system oriented towards desktop use. It is based on the Gentoo Linux distribution and used Fluxbox as its default and only graphical desktop environment.

It is available for download as a minimal, dual-arch Live CD

It is available for download as a dual-arch Live CD of approximately 250MB in size, deployable on a CD disc or a USB flash drive of 512MB or higher capacity. The dual-arch Live CD will run on computers that support both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures.

You can start the live system by copying the Live image to RAM

The user will be able to start the live system with default options, by copying the Live image to RAM (system memory), in safe mode or a combination of the last two, from the boot menu of the Live CD media. In addition, it is possible to perform a system memory diagnostic test or reboot the computer.

Fluxbox is in charge of the graphical desktop environment

As mentioned, the distribution is built around the extremely lightweight and very fast Fluxbox window manager, which is used as the default and only graphical desktop environment.

While it comprises of a single taskbar located on the bottom edge, designed to allow the user to quickly navigate between multiple virtual workspaces and interact with running programs, the main menu can only be access via the right-click context menu.

Contains a handful of open source, lightweight apps

The PapugLinux LiveCD distribution contains standard desktop applications, such as the AbiWord word processor, Bluefish HTML editor, Audacious media player, Xfburn CD/DVD burning software, Mozilla Firefox web browser, as well as Sylpheed email client.

In addition, the RoxTerm terminal emulator, gFTP file transfer client, Irssi IRC client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor are also included.

What is new in this release:

  • We choose to focus our additions on development tools for this version. The great Python language comes in 2 versions (2.7 and 3.1) and we also include Subversion and the very popular Git as version control systems. This could make PapugLinux a great bundle to start to learn Python or symply browse the open-source projects all over the world.

What is new in version 09.1:

  • As more than a year elapsed since the previous release, most of the packages have major updates. We focused our work on a better integration with Rox file manager by providing Rox-project tools for an improved user experience. MPlayer is now integrated to give multimedia support a better flavor, it was optimized for Intel platform and may fail on some AMD computers. No worry, Audacious and Ogle are still there to do the job! And for those who want to work with PapugLinux, Gumeric is now included to allow spreadsheet manipulation. Updated packages X.Org 7.2, Firefox 3.0.5, Sylpheed 2.5.0, Pidgin 2.5.2, AbiWord 2.6.4. Added packages: Gnumeric 1.8.3, MPlayer 1.0rc2.
