openSUSE Edu Li-f-e

openSUSE Edu Li-f-e (also known as openSUSE Education) is an open source and free distribution of Linux, an official version of the highly acclaimed openSUSE Linux operating system tailored specifically for educational environments, such as schools or universities.

Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs

The openSUSE Edu Li-f-e operating system is available for download for free, as two Live DVD ISO images, one for each of the supported hardware architectures, 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64). They can be deployed to either DVD discs or USB thumb drives of 4GB or higher capacity.

The Live DVD boot menu of openSUSE Edu Li-f-e is identical in look and functionality with the one of the main openSUSE distribution, allowing the user to start the live system with normal configuration, start the installation directly, perform a memory diagnostic test, boot an existing operating system from the local drive, as well as to choose between the modern and classic versions of the GNOME desktop environment or the MATE interface.

Features the KDE, MATE, GNOME-Shell and GNOME Classic environments

While the operating system comes with three different graphical desktop environments (GNOME Classic, GNOME and MATE), by default it will boot straight into a KDE Plasma desktop, which presents users with a familiar and modern interface that allows them to be more productive while enjoying the beauty of the KDE interface.

Includes a wide variety of educational apps

A wide variety of educational apps are included in the openSUSE Edu Li-f-e, because, after all it’s been designed from the ground up to be installed and used on computers of various educational institutions.

Among the preinstalled educational software, we can mention Tux Paint drawing program, PCB Designer software for designing PCBs, Marble virtual globe, GCompris educational suite, Sugar environment emulator, Scilab scientific software, GeoGebra dynamic mathematics tool, Tux Math educational math game, gElemental periodic table, and many more.

What is new in this release:

• The best Linux distribution for education got a whole lot better, your Li-f-e(Linux for Education) takes a "Leap" to 42.1. openSUSE Education community is proud to present this latest edition based on openSUSE 42.1 with all the features, updates and bug fixes available on it till date. This effectively makes it the only enterprise grade long term supported(LTS) distribution for Education.
• As with previous releases we have bundled a ton of softwares on this live DVD/USB specially packaged for education, along with the Plasma, GNOME and Mate Desktop Environments, full multimedia experience is also provided out of the box thanks to the Packman repositories. As always this edition of Li-f-e comes bundled with a lot of softwares useful for students, teachers, as well as IT admins of educational institutions. Apart from stable versions of KDE and Gnome, Cinnamon is also available. Sugar desktop suite makes a comeback thanks to the work of Xin Wang packaging it. Li-f-e also give full multimedia experience right out of the box without having to install anything extra. The live installable DVD iso stands at 3.3G as an incredible array of softwares from open source world are available on it, we have not just bundled them in, but have tried to integrate it with the distribution to give everything a seamless feel.
• KIWI-LTSP brings Li-f-e a very easy to setup LTSP server for PXE booting thin-clients/PC/laptop over the network with many new features and improvements.
