MyWolfe is yet another Puppy Linux derivative, a puplet created using Barry Kauler’s Woof build system. It has been designed from the ground up to be as lightweight and modern and possible, built around the Xfce desktop environment and the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

It’s distributed as a dual-arch, minimal Live CD

The operating system is distributed as a dual-arch and minimal Live CD ISO image that contains software packages optimized for computers supporting both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures.

Boot menu à la Puppy Linux

The developer did not tried to hide the fact that his distribution is based on Puppy Linux, as the Live CD boot menu is identical with the one of the upstream OS, designed to automatically start the live system in exactly five seconds.

From the boot prompt, the user can press the Enter key to quickly start the live system, the F2 key to access a basic help screen or the F3 key to access an advanced help screen, from where they can learn how to pass extra parameters to the kernel.

The operating system boots very fast, requires initial configuration

The OS boots very fast and requires users to choose a keyboard layout, location and timezone, set the hardware clock, as well as to choose a display server and a screen resolution.

Xfce uses its standard layout

As mentioned, the default graphical session is powered by Xfce, which uses its standard layout comprised of a top panel and a bottom dock (application launcher) that is hidden by default.

Various lightweight applications are included

Being based on Puppy Linux and designed from the ground up to be as lightweight as possible, MyWolfe includes various applications that are low on resources, such as the Viewnior image viewer, Mozilla Firefox web browser, gFTP file transfer client, AbiWord word processor and Gnumeric spredsheet editor.

What is new in this release:

  • MyWolfe is now using the Xfce-4.8 desktop.
  • It has Xserver-1.7.5
  • Xorg-7.3
  • Linux Kernel 2.6.34.1.
  • It has Firefox-3.6.13.
  • For media it has Xine-ui-99.6
  • xine-lib-1.1.19
  • For your picture needs it has Gimp-2.6.8.
  • For screen shot go here MyWolfe-028-pictures.

What is new in version 021:

  • This has a lot of under the hood upgrades of the libs; of the most noted the gtk+, glib and glibc. I have changed the desk top back to the puppy style with all the setup and config menus at the top. I have turned the background back over to rox. Now that the background change is working and my idea for trying to make a better puplet did not work out the way I planed, you can have a better way to set up the back ground. With this come back the auto mounting of rox with the items showing up on the desktop in the lower left hand corner. I have left only two icons the trash can and the lock screen on the desktop, the wbar is still there and fadded so as not to be distracting.
  • I will have to say that Gimp is no longer in MyWolfe I was unable to keep it stable so for the time being it is out.
  • I have also put in the libs needed by chrome to be able to use the google-phone plugin.
  • Just to let everybody know it still has the 2.6.34.1 kernel the 1.7.1 xserver and the 7.3 Xorg.

What is new in version 019:

  • This release of MyWolfe has a few new items in it and I have moved back up to the Xorg-7.5 now that I have things working right. It also has Xserver-1.7.1 it is close to one of Barry Kauler's Quirky build.
  • Thanks to scOtman for the program jwm-wallpaper, but I had to edit some because of the wbar. Wbar is at the top of the screen and I like it. Some who tried MyWolfe-018 got to see my first attempt at wbar I have come to understand it more now.
  • Again thanks to jemimah for here pwireless2 I have put pwireless2-1.0 in and it is doing a great job. She also introduce me to gogglesmm and I still have it in most of my builds.
  • Because of scOtman I was able to build a few small scripts to allow a user to change the system sounds though the control panel found on the wbar.
  • There is one to change the startup sound, one for shutdown sound, and last but not least, one for reboot sound.
  • Rox is back to being the default file manager, to put is simply it just works it may not have all the features I may want but it works. But I did disable the pinboard so as to allow Jwm to control the background image.
  • You can see screen shot of MyWolfe-019 here. I am using the same images as MyWolfe-018 for nothing has changed in the gui part.
  • It still has Gimp-2.6.8 I know there out the 2.6.10 but I have not had the time to work with it and Barry does a better job of it than me.
  • It has Picasa to help you organize and do simple editing of your pictures and if you want you can create and upload to a online data base and never lose them.
  • As with all my last builds it has Google-chrome 5.0.375.99 stable I did not put in the development release for I was not sure if it was ready for prime time.
  • I also want to thank Barry Kauler for his fine work on the woof build system I have come to know it inside and out. What a learning experience.
  • Last note is if a pet will run in Quirky it should then run in MyWolfe for I have not change any of the libs.

What is new in version 016 Beta 2:

  • Update Google-chrome added task bar to top of screen

What is new in version 014:

  • This was made possible in a large part do to Playdayz sending Barry some changes for the woof system to allow it to use the lucid library's.
  • It has the 2.6.33.2 kernel, glibc 2.11. I have it using JWM desktop. I put a lot of thought into how I wanted the puppy to be, In previous MyWolfe's I have striped out a lot and trying to keep it lean but at the same time give it a clean desktop and menu system. MyWolfe is a more fatter puppy but I keep the clean and lean outlook. But it is fatter do to added programs that I used a lot and others had pointed out was a good think to have. So it has the full Open-office 3.11 made by Barry Kauler taken out of his sfs and made into a pet. This give MyWolfe a full office suite. I put in Picasa photo program put out by Google, it can edit photos not as much as Gimp, but does what most people need to do. With the added bonus if you have a Picasa account you can upload to your account right from Picasa program.

What is new in version 013:

  • glibc 2.11
  • The GIMP 2.6.8
  • Xine-ui 0.99.6
  • Google Chrome 5.0.377.0

What is new in version 013 Beta 1:

  • Hi all if you want to try it out waiting on some fixes from BarryK but just thought it was doing pretty good as it is. Yes it is based on the T2-8r build has Google-chrome-5.0.366.2.dev browser and does have BarryK's simple network solution internet connection in it. i up graded xine-lib to 1.1.8 but was not able to compile the 0.99.6 ui cant find the glibc 2.11. give it a go and let me know what you think. It has the 2.6.33.2 kernel and is using open-box window manger with fbpanel for a menu driver.
