Manjaro Linux Fluxbox is an open source distribution of Linux based on the well known Arch Linux operating system and built around the extremely lightweight Fluxbox window manager. It’s designed to be used on low-end computers.

Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs

The project is distributed as two Live DVD ISO-hybrid images that can be deployed to USB flash drives using the UNetbootin application, or written on blank DVD discs with any CD/DVD burning software.

Boot options

While the boot medium can be used to start the live environment (with free drivers (default option) or with proprietary ones), run a memory test, view detailed information about the machine’s hardware components, as well as to boot the currently installed operating system.

Uses the minimalist Fluxbox window manager

As mentioned, the live session is powered by the very minimalistic Fluxbox window manager, which provides users with a clean desktop environment comprised of a panel located on the bottom edge of the screen.

The panel can only be used to quickly switch between virtual desktops, and interact with running applications and the system tray area. If you want to access the main menu and launch pre-installed applications, you’ll have to right-click anywhere on the desktop.

A nice feature of this Manjaro edition it the dock (application launcher) located on the left side of the screen. It allows users to launch their favorite applications, as well as to quickly access the main system functions (shutdown, restart, logout and lock).

Default applications

Default applications include the Claws Mail email client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, LXMusic audio player, VLC Media Player, AbiWord word processing app, Gnumeric spreadsheet software, Viewnior image viewer, Leafpad text editor, and Thunar file manager.

Bottom line

All in all, the Fluxbox flavor of Manjaro Linux is a nice addition to the user-friendly, Arch Linux-based operating system. It can be used to revive old and dusty desktop computers or laptops.
