Exton|Defender SRS (Super Rescue System) is an open source project that provides users with a collection of computer operating systems based on the Linux kernel and designed from the ground up to be used for system rescue and system recovery tasks.

Based on Fedora and Mageia

Each Exton|Defender SRS flavor is based on a well known Linux operating system, such as Fedora and Mageia, both of which are derived from Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Mandriva respectively.

While the Fedora edition is supported only on 64-bit computer platforms, the Mageia flavor boots on 32-bit and 64-bit PCs, but includes software packages optimized only for 32-bit CPU architectures.

Distributed as Live DVDs with Cinnamon and LXDE

Both Exton|Defender SRS editions are available for download as hybrid Live DVD ISO images that can be deployed to either USB flash drives of 2GB or higher capacity, or blank/RW DVD discs.

As mentioned, each Exton|Defender SRS edition comes with a different desktop environment. Therefore, the Fedora edition comes with the Cinnamon desktop environment, and the Mageia flavor uses LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment).

Includes a plethora of open source applications

Among the pre-installed system rescue utilities, we can mention GParted, TestDisk, Sfdisk, GNU ddrescue, PartImage, FSArchiver, Shred, Safecopy, NTFS-3G, rsync, and Midnight Commander.

Default applications include the LibreOffice office suite, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, GIMP image editor, Emacs advanced editor. The Google Chrome web browser is also included for watching Netflix movies.

In addition, the NetworkManager, Samba, JDK (Java Development Kit), JRE (Java Runtime Environment) technologies, as well as a plethora of power tools for all of your compilation needs are also included in Exton|Defender SRS.

Bottom line

All in all, Exton|Defender SRS provides for a decent set of GNU/Linux distributions that can be used to repair broken systems, as well as to rescue data from damaged drives and do all sorts of administration tasks in style, no matter the operating system installed on the respective computer.

What is new in version 140607 (Slackware):

  • I've made a new version of Exton|Defender 64 bit based on Slackware 14.1. It uses Mate 1.8.1 and kernel 3.14.5-x86_64-exton. The Mate Desktop environment is not included in Slackware's official repositories. To be able to install Mate in Exton|Defender I had to add Salix‘s repositories. The MATE Desktop Environment is the continuation of GNOME 2. It provides an intuitive and attractive desktop environment using traditional metaphors for Linux and other Unix-like operating systems. Note: I've also arranged it so that version 140607 can run from RAM. I wonderful way to run a Linux system. I.e. super fast! When Exton|Defender has booted up from the USB stick you can eject the stick. I've also changed kernel from kernel 3.14-x86_64-exton to kernel 3.14.5-x86_64-exton.

What is new in version 140410 (Slackware):

  • Based on Slackware 14.1.

  • It uses Cinnamon 2.0.14
  • Linux kernel 3.13.8

What is new in version 140403:

  • I have removed the KDE Desktop environment and installed LXDE instead. KDE is a bit slow when running Mageia live. (I.e. from CD/USB).
  • Furthermore I have installed the following rescue and repairing tools: NTFS-3g, GParted 0.16.2, PartImage 0.6.9, Sfdisk (util-linux-ng 2.21.2), Rsync 3.1.0, Ddrescue 1.17, FSArchiver 0.6.17, TestDisk 6.14 and Midnight Commander 4.8.11.
