BlankOn is an open source distribution of Linux that provides users with an Ubuntu-based desktop operating system designed from the ground up to be used by the Indonesian Linux community. It has been developed by the Indonesia Linux Movement Foundation (Yayasan Penggerak Linux Indonesia / YPLI) and supports both Indonesian and English languages.
Availability, supported architectures and boot options
The distribution is available for download on the dedicated section (see above) as two Live DVD ISO images, one for each of the supported architectures (64-bit and 32-bit). They can be used as-is or installed on a local disk drive by using a blank CD disc or a USB flash drive.
From the boot prompt, users can try the operating system without installing anything on their computers, as well as to directly install the distributions without testing it, which is not recommended because certain hardware components might not be supported.
Installed apps and the desktop environment
The system features a highly customized GNOME desktop environment that provides users with a traditional and unique desktop experience. It is comprised of a single panel located on the upper part of the screen, from where users can access the main menu, launch apps, and interact with running programs.
It includes a wide range of open source applications, among which we can mention the GIMP image editor, Inkscape vector graphics editor, Gedit text editor, gThumb image viewer, LibreOffice office suite, Chromium web browser, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, and Evolution email and calendar client.
In addition, it comes with the Audacious audio player, Brasero CD/DVD burning software, Cheese webcam viewer, VLC Media Player, Evince document viewer, GParted partition editor, Nautilus file manager, as well as various other useful utilities.
Bottom line
In conclusion, BlankOn is a stable, reliable, easy to use and beautiful operating system based on the world's most popular free Linux distribution, Ubuntu, and specifically designed for the Indonesia Ubuntu Community.
