Markdown is a well established text formatting language, developed by John Gruber in Perl. Markdown implements a simple syntax for styling text, and it was created to replace HTML tags on the frontend (Markdown still gets compiled to HTML in the backend).
While the original syntax was great, the developers at GitHub have created an improved version of Markdown, which they use for their own site, and which slowly started getting adopted by the Markdown community as well.
The LightUp PHP class was created so developers can read GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) programmatically and use it inside their PHP applications.
The class can also generate GFM-friendly markup, helping style text via Markdown using PHP code.
On its own the class doesn't do anything special, but it can be integrated with more complex applications and help build truly amazing text editors and other apps.
