Iris is an open source and completely free web-based software project that comprises of a CGI script, Dovecot configuration files, an Exim MTA (Mail Transfer Agent), as well as Ansible and Vagrant playbooks.

Being based on Exim, Roundcube, Dovecot, SpamAssassin, MySQL, ClamAV and Perl technologies, Iris allows users to build an email server that has support for authenticated SMTP relay, virtual domains, vacation, domain and account administration, as well as SMTP-time malware, over-quota and spam reject capabilities.

Iris is an OS-independent application that can be installed on any computer where a modern and regularly updated GNU/Linux distribution exists. It supports modern web browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Internet Explorer, or Safari.

Features at a glance

Key features include support for handling multiple independent domains that have separate sets of aliases and users, support for handling accounts through a web-based interface written in PHP, and support for stopping malware from infecting the mail server at SMTP time by instantly rejecting mail delivery based on an active anti-spam or antivirus software.

Additionally, Iris offers integrated monitoring capabilities that constantly watch the user’s quota. Among other interesting features, we can mention vacation auto-responders that can be controlled by end-users via the vacation add-on of the Roundcube webmail software, as well as support for restricting POP3 and IMAP logins for selected domains.

Another interesting feature is the ability to hide a domain from MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) in preparation for moving the respective mail domain to the server. The visibility of the domain can be easily modified with a click of a button.

Modifiable by selected users or super-users

There are two kinds of users that can modify the mail server, users with privileges and super-users. While the latter can modify anything and everything, the former are allowed to modify only the domains that have been assigned to them by the super-user, taking into consideration the configured quota.
