Mumble is a cross-platform, freely distributed and open source graphical software project implemented in C++ around the Qt toolkit to provide a high-quality and low-latency voice communication utility tailored specifically for gamers.

A powerful and flexible voice chat client/server

In other words. Mumble is a powerful and flexible voice chat client that allows gamers to communicate with one another more efficiently while playing games. It supports Positional Audio in games, as well as In-Application Overlay.

It is also a very efficient and free server software that provides a powerful API (Application Programming Interface) through Ice middleware in order to support various programming languages.

Offers encrypted communication between gamers

One of the coolest features of Mumble is that is offers encrypted communication between gamers, allowing them to stay secure and private at the same time while playing their favorite games online. Private- and public-key authentication is implemented by default.

Another interesting feature is the ability to recognize friends across servers. A built-in wizard will guide users through the entire setup process. Mumble is installed by default in various gaming-oriented distributions of GNU/Linux, but you can easily install it from the main software repositories of modern operating systems.

Under the hood

Taking a look under the hood of the Mumble project, we can notice that it has been written in the C++ programming language, which means that it is very fast and modern. The Qt GUI toolkit has been used for its beautiful and attractive graphical user interfaces. The application supports both 32-bit and 64-bit CPU architectures.

Runs on GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows

Mumble is a multiplatform application that runs well on all GNU/Linux distributions, as well as on the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. It was awarded by SourceForge with the “Project of the Month” award in 2009.

What is new in version 1.2.0:

  • This release uses a new protocol between the client and server, which means a 1.2.0 client is only compatible with 1.2.0 or newer servers, and a 1.1.8 client can't connect to a 1.2.0 server. The new protocol is designed to be easily extended, so we should never have this problem again. If your favorite server still runs 1.1.8 don't worry, 1.2.0 comes with a backwards compatible client.

What is new in version 1.1.8:

  • Murmur now uses even less resources, and only starts worker threads for virtual servers on demand. Ice now has callback functions, allowing you to create server-side scripts that react to users authenticating, moving around etc. It also supports outsourcing authentication, enabling you to do authorize users from a third-party database. Additionally, the Ice interface has been fully documented. You can now use images in the server welcome text and text messages, using regular HTML tags. From the server, you can add context menu items to the server, player and channel menu on the client, enabling third-party feature extensions. There's a small example included which enables in-client user registrations. The windows installer is now fully localized. Positional audio should now give more natural results, and we support a lot of additional games. Log messages can now be shown as notifications using a baloon tip, notify or Growl. Additionally, text-to-speech can be replaced with pre-recorded sounds. You can now bind multiple shortcuts to every function. The overlay now works on OSX, but is considered experimental.

What is new in version 1.1.7:
