This game is played on an 8x8 board, only the dark squares are used. Each player has 12 pieces, Black starts and then players alternate turns. Pieces move diagonally, one square forward. If there is an opponent's piece on an adjacent square and a vacant square immediately behind it, the player jumps over this piece and removes it from the game. If a piece reaches the end of the board, it is promoted to a king. A king moves the same way as a regular piece and it may additionally move and jump backwards. A victory is achieved by blocking the other player. This can be done by capturing all pieces or by blocking their movement.
Checkers 1 is designed mainly for casual players. Even those who have never played American checkers will get started quickly. The pieces can be moved by dragging&dropping or by clicking the starting square and the target square. The application animates moves and highlights the last move. After clicking on a piece, all possible target squares are highlighted. Advice is also provided via the status bar below the checkerboard. Feel free to undo your move if you make a mistake. The look of the application can be chosen from several styles. Complete help and rules can be found at the author's website.
