Exaile is an open source, freely distributed and multi-platform software project designed from the ground up to act as a media player for GTK-based desktop environments on GNU/Linux systems. It also supports Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Features at a glance

Key features include automatic fetching of album art, handling of large music libraries, lyrics fetching, artist and album information via Wikipedia, Last.fm scrobbling support, support for iPod devices, built-in shoutcast directory browser, tabbed playlists and blacklisting of tracks.

In addition, it is also possible to download guitar tablature from the fretplay.com website, submit played tracks on your iPod to Last.fm, Internet radio support, 10-band equalizer, queue manager, import and export of playlists in and to various formats, as well as support for URLs.

Easy to use graphical user interface

Exaile’s GUI (Graphical User Interface) is easy to use and straightforward, comprised of a main area where you can interact with your songs, as well as a tabbed sidebar that gives users quick access to lyrics, playlists, radio, music collection and file browser.

Supports a wide range of audio file formats

As expected, the application’s most important feature is the built-in support for a wide range of audio file formats. Exaile can play MP3, FLAC, OGG Vorbis, M4A, AAC, Opus, MIDI and many other audio files.

Under the hood and availability

The application is written entirely in the Python programming language and uses the GTK+ GUI toolkit for its graphical user interface. On GNU/Linux systems, it is officially available for download only as a source archive, which requires users to configure and compile the application prior to installation.

Supported operating systems and hardware platforms

Being written in Python, Exaile is a cross-platform application that can be successfully used on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and all GNU/Linux distributions where the GTK+ and Python requirements exist. Both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms are supported at this time.

What is new in this release:

  • Errors loading Smart Playlists that filter based on a playlist
  • Missing icon issue
  • Disable equalizer by default

What is new in version 3.4.1:

  • For those of you wanting to use Exaile on OSX Mavericks or Yosemite, this release is for you! Prior releases of Exaile did not work properly because of font issues in GTK. This release contains workarounds for that.
