XMMS

XMMS is an open source piece of software that provides users with a small, easy to use and user-friendly audio player tool that lets users to listen to their favorite music artists and audio tracks on GNU/Linux operating systems.

Features at a glance

The project is heavily inspired by the popular Winamp application created for the Microsoft Windows and Android operating systems. It has been designed from the ground up to support MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, and other files formats.

Key features include the ability to playback a wide range of audio files formats, 10-band equalizer, playlist support, ability to read information on demand or on load, real-time priority, plugin architecture, skins, and much more.

It offers a familiar user interface written in GTK+ and designed to be identical with the one used by the Winamp software. When opening the application for the first time, only the main audio playback component will load.

However, the equalizer and playlist components are two clicks away. The 10-band equalizer comes with no presets, but users can easily create their own, as well as to import Winamp presets.

Supported playlists include M3U and PLS, allowing users to quickly load, save and create new ones with as many audio files as they want. The playlist component of the software also lets users to sort files by title, filename, path + filename, and date.

The application supports loading of single, local files, multiple files stored in a local folder, as well as a remote location that uses a standard URL (Uniform Resource Locator).

Additionally, the program supports four different modes, such as Visualization Mode, Analyzer Mode, Scope Mode, and WindowShade VU Mode. Also, it allows users to change the refresh rate, analyzer and peaks falloff, as well as to add vizualization plugins.

Bottom line

In conclusion, XMMS is a great and decent audio player application that, unfortunately, is no longer used on modern GNU/Linux operating systems, simply because it's not maintained anymore and uses deprecated dependencies.
