TurnKey Observium Live CD is an open source software appliance based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux operating system and built around the Observium software. It provides users with an easy-to-use solution for deploying dedicated Observium servers without much hassle.
Observium is an open source web-based network monitoring and management platform written in PHP and engineered to support Cisco, Linux, HP, Windows, Dell, Juniper, FreeBSD, Brocade, NetApp, and Netscaler.
Key features include all of the upstream Observium configurations, which are installed by default in /opt/observium, a Postfix mail server for sending email messages to users, such as password recovery, as well as support for secure connections using the latest SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) implementation.
In addition, the appliance contains the phpMyAdmin administration front-end for managing MySQL databases, which listens on port 12322 and uses SSL, and various Webmin modules for configuring the MySQL, PHP, Postfix and Apache components.
All of the recommended packages are installed in this TurnKey appliance, including the powerful libvirt virtualization library for monitoring virtual machines, and cronjob for polling and discovery. Furthermore, for security reasons, all secrets are automatically regenerated during the installation process.
The appliance is available for download as a Live CD ISO images for the 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, as well as virtual images in the Xen, OpenStack, OpenVZ, OpenNode and OVF formats. The default username for Webmin, phpMyAdmin, MySQL and SSH is root, and the Observium username is admin.
The installation process takes only a few minutes and requires users to format and partition the disk drive, as welll as to choose where to install the boot loader. After the installation, the first boot configuration wizard will kick in, enabling users to set new passwords for the root account, the MySQL 'root' account, and the Observium 'admin' account.
