Toorox KDE and GNOME are two edition of a Gentoo-based Linux distribution designed as a desktop-oriented operating system that borrows the automatic hardware detection and configuration technology from the KNOPPIX Linux distro.

Distributed in multiple editions, with support for several languages

The Toorox OS is distributed in multiple editions, two Live DVDs with the KDE Plasma desktop environment and two others with GNOME, supporting both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (amd64) hardware platforms and several languages.

The live system can be started with a specific screen resolution

From the boot menu, the user must first select a language that will be used for the live environment, as well as boot option, such as the default one or another with a predefined screen resolution.

Choose between two powerful graphical desktop environments

Being distributed as separate KDE and GNOME editions, you can easily choose between these two powerful desktop environments by downloading the respective ISO image. While the KDE Plasma desktop uses a tradition layout comprised of a single panel located on the bottom edge of the screen, the GNOME interface boasts the classic two-panel layout.

Both editions include the same selection of software packages

Both Toorox editions include the same selection of software packages, except for the ones that are specific to the respective desktop environment, KDE or GNOME. Among some of the them, we can mention the LibreOffice office suite, Chromium web browser, GIMP image editor, VLC Media Player, Audacious audio player, Ardour digital audio workstation, as well as Wine for running Windows apps.

Bottom line

In conclusion, Toorox KDE and Toorox GNOME are two great editions of this Gentoo-based operating system, specifically designed for modern computers. If you want to use Toorox on a low-end machine, do not hesitate to download the Xfce and Lite edition of Toorox from Softoware.

What is new in version 01.2010:

  • With the beginning of this new year it's time for a new release.
  • Many people asked me whether there is a 64-Bit version, too?
  • Now i can say: Yes, it is!
  • With the release of Toorox 01.2010 you can get a 64-Bit version, too.
  • It contains the 2.6.32-gentoo kernel and the KDE was updated to the recent version 4.3.4.
  • The Toorox Installer is now able to exclude your /home/... folder to another partition and you can install the bootloader into a single partition or floppy disk.
  • There's a new entry in the Systemconfig: Mobile Broadband. It starts the application umtsmon. There you can configure your mobile UMTS connection and bring it up.
  • All packages for a pptp-vpn connection were included and you can configure it via Networkmanager and the nm-applet.
  • KFTPgrabber was exchanged with gftp and there's a new audio-mixer installed: mixxx. You will find it in the ?-Starter - "Party-DJ".

What is new in version 06.2009:

  • As always - the KDE was updated to the latest version
  • 4.2.4. The recent CVS-snapshot of the plasmoid lancelot_part was included, because QT
  • was updated to 4.5.1 and the old version of the plasmoid has some trouble with it (empty box).
  • The USB-Stick creator script was optimised. Now there are 3 options for you:
  • Static, Personal and Encrypted. For the last 2 options your home folder will be stored
  • and with the third option even password-encrypted when you shutdown the system.
  • Now 2 partitions will be created - ext2 for Toorox and fat32 for regular data storage on
  • your pendrive.
  • Some users had problems (Kernel Panic) after an installation and booting from an external
  • USB-HDD. This came up, because the kernel needs some seconds for its initialisation.
  • This was fixed in the installer.

Requirements:

  • i686 CPU (Pentium II and faster) 256MB RAM DVD
