QPhotoRec is just a simple graphical user interface for the PhotoRec command-line software, which allows users to effortlessly use one of the most powerful photo recovery applications in Debian/Ubuntu-based operating systems. As its name suggests, it is designed in the cross-platform Qt GUI toolkit.
What it PhotoRec?
PhotoRec is an open source and very powerful utility that allows users to recover image or video files from damaged memory cards, including CompactFlash, SecureDigital, Memory Stick, SmartMedia, MMC, Microdrive, or USB memory drives.
Supports all major file systems
The application support all popular file systems, including EXT2, EXT3, EXT4, FAT, exFAT, NTFS and HFS+. It has been successfully tested with numerous digital cameras, as well as many portable media players, including Canon EOS 60D, 300D, 10D, Olympus C350N, C860L, Mju 400 Digital, Stylus 300, Casio Exilim EX-Z 750, Sony Alpha DSLR, DSC-P9, NEX-6, HP PhotoSmart 620, 850, 935, Praktica DCZ-3.4, Nikon CoolPix 775, 950, 5700 and Pentax K20D.
Supported on all mainstream operating systems
QPhotoRec is a cross-platform project that will run on any GNU/Linux operating system, as well as on the DOS, Microsoft Windows, BSD (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD), Sun Solaris and Mac OS X platforms. Both 32 and 64-bit computer architectures are supported at this time.
Getting started with QPhotoRec
To use the QPhotoRec application on your Debian/Ubuntu-based operating system, you will have to first download the native installer from Softoware, save it on your desktop or Home directory, double click it and follow the on-screen instructions. Basically, the Ubuntu Software Center should open and all you have to do is to click the ‘Install’ button, entering your password when asked. That’s it! You can now use the application from the Start Menu.
