PhonixJ is a very simple, basic, free, open source, smart and lightweight phone-book application implemented in Java, based on the SQLite database backend and the SWT graphical library. It is a phone-book utility for your GNU/Linux, Window or Mac desktop.

Features at a glance

Key features include an easy-to-use and user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI), support for categories, support for storing up to 4 phone numbers and e-mail addresses per contact, support for storing website for contacts, as well as advanced search options.

Additionally, the application comes with a set of useful tools, support for adding and removing contacts, support for creating vCard 3.0 cards, support for creating contact cards in SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), and support for creating email envelope addresses.

Among other interesting features, we can mention a sophisticated search engine that allows you to quickly filter of all your contacts, customizable printing options, support for web browser and email clients, as well as support for importing and exporting contacts in batch mode via VCF 3.0.

Another interesting feature is a built-in tool that allows you to select multiple email addresses to which you can send emails. The program has been successfully tested with the KContact application. Recording of notes is also supported since version 1.0.3 of the project.

Under the hood and supported operating systems

Looking under the hood of PhonixJ, we can notice that the applicatin has been written entirely in the Java programming language, using the Java SWT (Standard Widget Toolkit) technology for its graphica user interface.

Being written in Java, PhonixJ is cross-platform and compatible with any operating system where the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) technology is available, including all distributions of Linux, as well as the Mac OS X and Windows OSes. Supported hardware platforms include 32-bit and 64-bit.

What is new in this release:

  • Added notes record to each contact

What is new in version 1.0.2:

  • Added an option for batch export/import of the contacts via .vcf (3.0) files (tested with Kontact)
  • Added a tool to select multiple e-mail addresses, copy them to clipboard and open compose mail
