OSE (OpenNMS Sans Effort) is an open source Linux distribution that has been designed from the ground up to automatically install and configure the OpenNMS monitoring system on any computer. It is based on the CentOS operating system, which in turn is based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OS.

Distributed only as a Live CD image for 64-bit and 32-bit architectures

This CentOS-based operating system can be downloaded via Softoware’s secure servers or directly from its homepage, as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image that can only be installed (no live mode is available) on either 32-bit or 64-bit computers (will be automatically detected during the installation - see below for details).

Boot options

At the boot prompt, the user must press Enter to install the operating system in standalone mode, type the “standalone-auto” command to install the distribution in fully automatic standalone mode, type “postgresql” to install a PostgreSQL database server, type “opennms” to install an OpenNMS server, or type “rescue” enter the rescue mode, which is good for repairing broken OSes.

The OpenNMS installation can be semi or fully automatic

While you can type “standalone-auto” at the boot prompt to install the operating system in fully automatic mode, you can also just press Enter to access the normal graphical installer, which requires you to choose a language and keyboard layout, setup timezone and system clock, as well as to enter a root (system administrator) password.

Bottom line

All in all, OSE is a great Linux distribution for users who are looking for an easy to install solution for deploying OpenNMS with minimum effort. It is based on the CentOS Linux distribution, uses the latest upstream OpenNMS monitoring software, as well as the scripts for managing and setting up OpenNMS.

What is new in this release:

  • Integration of OpenNMS 1.10.8
  • Integration of PostgreSQL 9.1.8
  • Integration of CentOS 6.4 and his updates
