nOS is an open source Linux distribution specifically designed to be installed and used on netbook computers or old machines that don’t support modern operating system. Being based on the well known Ubuntu Linux operating system, and built around the KDE desktop environment, nOS is designed with speed, simplicity and ease of use in mind.

Geared towards novice users, distributed as Live CDs

It is geared towards novice Linux users who used the deprecated Windows XP operating system and don't have enough money to invest into a brand-new Windows 8 PC. The system is distributed as Live CD ISO images, supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. A non-PAE ISO image is also available for download.

Boot options

From the boot menu you can start the live environment with default settings or in safe graphics mode (if your video card is not supported by the default option), run the Memtest tool to test the Random Access Memory (RAM) on your computer for errors, boot the currently installed operating system, or install the distribution.

Comes pre-loaded with numerous apps

in nOS, users will be able to browse the Internet with the Mozilla Firefox application, send and receive emails with Mozilla Thunderbird, download torrents with KTorrent, chat with their friends and family using Kopete, watch movies with VLC Media Player, listen to their favorite artists with Amarok, and use the LibreOffice suite for all of their office tasks.

Among other preinstalled applications, we can mention KOrganizer, Okular, FBReader, Skanlite, Gwenview, Kamoso, KSnapshot, Akregator, K3b, GParted, Remastersys, USB Image Writer, Dolphin, Nepomuk Cleaner, KInfoCenter, Kate, Ark, Google Drive, KNotes, Klipper, KCalc, Sweeper, KWrite, and synaptics.

Uses the netbook interface of KDE

KDE is a strange choice for low-end machines and netbooks. But considering the fact that nOS uses the netbook interface of the KDE desktop environment, and because the entire system has been tweaked for speed, we recommend it for your old and dusty netbook or laptop.
