Mozilla XULRunner is an open source, cross-platform and freely downloadable software developed by Mozilla, the company that produces the amazing and popular Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, as well as the SeaMonkey all-in-one Internet application suite.
A Mozilla runtime environment
XULRunner is a Mozilla runtime environment, which can be used by developers to effortlessly bootstrap XPCOM (Cross Platform Component Object Model) and XUL-based web applications. It provides a smart mechanism for installing, upgrading and uninstalling these apps.
A SDK (Software Development Kit) is also available
Mozilla XULRunner also provides the libxul library, which allows developers to inject the Mozilla technologies into other products. A SDK (Software Development Kit) is also available, for building XUL-based extensions (add-ons) and applications.
Command-line options
The software can be used from a console/terminal environment. After downloading the binary package that corresponds to your computer’s architecture, unpack it, open a Terminal app, navigate to the location where you’ve extracted the archive file (e.g. cd /home/softoware/xulrunner) and run the ‘./xulrunner’ command.
The command will display the program’s usage message and available command-line options, which can be used to specify an app-file (application initialization file), as well as to add application specific options or to print the GRE version string on stdout.
More details about how to use the Mozilla XULRunner program to develop add-ons for Mozilla’s applications, as well as new software projects, can be found on the project’s website, where you can also find information about user profiles and versioning.
Runs on Linux, Windows and Mac
Just like all of Mozilla’s applications (Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey), Mozilla XULRunner is supported on all mainstream operating systems, including all GNU/Linux distributions, as well as Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It is supported on both 32 and 64-bit computer platforms.
