kAnyRemote is an open source and freely distributed software project designed from the offset to act as a front-end for the anyRemote bluetooth remote control software, specifically designed for the KDE Plasma graphical desktop environment.

What is anyRemote?

The main goal of the anyRemote project is to provide wireless Bluetooth or InfraRed remote control service for any Linux operating system. A couple of other GUI (Graphical User Interface) front-ends for the anyRemote software exist, such as gAnyRemote for the GNOME desktop environment and other GTK-based desktop environments, as well as a Java client for Android devices.

anyRemote for KDE

If we were to describe the kAnyRemote software in three words, we would call it “anyRemote for KDE.” Once started, the application runs in the background, but you can always interact with it via the icon implemented in the system tray area. From there, the user will be able to quickly start or stop the anyRemote server, as well as to view the applications that are connected at that time.

Apps that work with AnyRemote

A large number of KDE and GNOME apps work well with the AnyRemote software. Amarok, Audacious, Aqualung, BMP, Banshee, Comix, Decibel audio player, Elisa, Evince, Exaile, Eye of GNOME, GPicView, Gmusicbrowser, gThumb, JuK, Kaffeine, Kaboodle, KPlayer and Kdetv have configuration files for anyRemote.

In addition, the Kmid, Kscd, KMPlayer, Kuickshow, KView, Listen, MPD, Moc, MythTV, MPlayer, Noatun, Apache OpenOffice Impress, Okular, Quodlibet, Rhythmbox, SMPlayer, TVtime, Totem, Xine, XBMC (Kodi), XMMS2, WmCtrl and VLC Media Player are also supported.

Under the hood and supported OSes

A quick look under the hood will show us that the application is written in Qt and requires the anyRemote software, which should be installed on your system prior to installing this KDE front-end. It has been successfully tested on a large number of Linux distributions, supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms.
