jQuery Autotab can be used with fixed sized input filters. For example if a form field has a limit of four characters, whenever the user has typed in four characters, Autotab will automatically move his input cursor to the next field.

This way the user does not have to push the TAB key anymore and type his text in a fluid motion.

Normal form field navigation via the TAB and SHIFT+TAB keyboard shortcuts still works, even with Autotab loaded on the page.

Besides this auto-tab focus function, jQuery Autotab also allows the developer to setup artificial input filters.

So if the developer needs only numbers or alpha characters inside an input field, he can use jQuery Autotab for that and avoid loading a new jQuery plugin or JavaScript library to perform this action.

A demo is included with the download package.

What is new in this release:

  • Reverts change to how the maxlength property was handled.

What is new in version 1.9.0:

  • Autotab now allows you to navigate through your fields with arrow keys, supports drop events, and has basic support for HTML5 input types: tel, number, email, url and search. Two pasting bugs were also squashed.

What is new in version 1.7.0:

  • All form fields are now supported, and hidden fields are filtered out from the list of selected elements.

What is new in version 1.5.5:

  • Addresses a bug that occurs in Internet Explorer 6 and up. If you selected all three characters in a text box, and proceeded to type three allowed characters (overriding the old characters), the second and third characters would appear before the first.

Requirements:

  • JavaScript enabled on client side
  • jQuery 1.7 or higher
