Javalix

Javalix is an open source and completely free Linux-based operating system designed especially for Java developers and programmers who write code in the cross-platform Java programming language. It is based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux OS.

Distributed as a multi-part zip archive

At the moment, Javalix is distributed as a single ISO image file split into three zip archives. You will need to download all files from the download section (see link above), place them in a directory and extract them. The end result will be a Live DVD ISO image of approximately 1.5GB in size.

To extract the archive on a Linux system, you must first install the zip and unzip packages, run the “zip -s- JAVALIX1.0.2.zip -O JAVALIX.zip” command to join all three parts into a single one, than simply extract the ISO image from the JAVALIX.zip archive using the “unzip JAVALIX.zip” command (without quotes).

Boot options

At the boot prompt, the user can start the live environment with default boot options or in failsafe mode, start the graphical or text-mode installer directly, or access the advanced options where you can view detailed information about your hardware components and test the system memory for errors.

Uses the GNOME Classic graphical desktop environment

The distribution uses the GNOME Classic graphical desktop environment, which comprises of two panels, a top one for accessing the main menu and launching applications, and a bottom one for interacting with running programs and cycling between virtual workspaces. We call this a productive environment!

Bottom line

Javalix supports both English and Brazilian Portuguese languages, uses the GNOME desktop environment by default and it's targeted at developers who use the Java, JavaScript, JSP, PHP, Python, and UNIX Shell programming languages. Be aware though, that the live environment might not boot on some systems, so you’ll have to install the distribution.
