illumian is an open-source and completely free GNU/Linux operating system that combines technologies from powerful project like Nexenta, OpenIndiana and Debian GNU/Linux. It’s powered by the illumos kernel.
The OS is distributed as a dual-arch CD
illumian is available for download as dual-arch CD ISO image that includes software packages optimized for both the 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures.
No live mode is available on the ISO image
The user must write the ISO image to a USB thumb drive or a CD disc in order to boot it from the BIOS of a computer, when you will encounter a boot menu that allows you to install the operating system, perform a system memory diagnostic test, boot from the local drive, as well as to enter the recovery console to rescue a broken operating system.
The entire installation process is text-based
The illumian installer is text-based and allows the user to permanently install the operating system on a local disk or removable drive, which must be already inserted in the computer when the installation process starts.
During the installation process, you will be required to select a keyboard layout and timezone, partition the disk, enter a password for the root (system administrator) account, set up users and passwords, configure the hostname and network interfaces.
The distribution is no longer under active development
After restart, the distribution will boot and you must log into the system using the username and password created during the installation process. From here, if you’re a good system administrator, you know you’re way around a server system.
Keep in mind though, that the distribution is no longer under active development and will not receive software update, security patches and bugfixes, so our suggestion is to search Softoware for another firewall distribution that is still maintained.
