gnome-typer

gnome-typer (also known as typer) is a freely distributed, open source and educational graphical software implemented in C and designed from the ground up to help all Linux users learn how to type faster and better on their keyboards.

The application has been tailored to be used under the GNOME desktop environment for training and learning keyboard typing. It features keyboard lessons, keyboard layouts, text file support, statistics, and fortune support.

It makes use and contributes to the mkproject (Make Project) technology, with which it was generated. gnome-typer only works under Linux kernel-based operating systems, and no Windows or Mac port exist at the moment.

Getting started with gnome-typer

As this is an independent and small software project, it cannot be installed from the main software repositories of a GNU/Linux distribution. Instead, you will have to compile it and install the program using its freely distributed sources. In addition to the source tarball, gnome-typer is also distributed as a native installer for 32-bit installations of the Fedora 18 operating system.

Therefore, to install gnome-typer on any other distribution of Linux than Fedora 18, you must download the latest version of the application from Softoware, save the archive somewhere on your computer, extract it and open a terminal emulator.

On the Terminal app, you must use the ‘cd’ command to navigate to the location of the extracted archive files (e.g. cd /home/softoware/typer-0.4.2), run the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure and compile the program (the fortune package is required for a successful compilation), and execute the ‘make install’ command as root or the ‘sudo make install’ command as a privileged user to install gnome-typer system wide.

Open the software from the main menu of your desktop environment, like you would open any other graphical application that is installed on your system, and follow the on-screen instructions to proceed and learn how to type faster and better.
