GNOME Power Manager is an open source component of the highly acclaimed GNOME desktop environment, allowing users to manage their portable and desktop computers.

Designed for GNOME

It comes bundled with the GNOME project and it’s installable from the default software repositories of modern Linux distributions. A source archive is also available for download on the dedicated section.

It is not an actual application with a GUI front-end. Instead, it acts as a daemon inside GNOME’s desktop session with the main goal to reduce power consumption by any means necessary.

Features at a glance

Many options are available for reducing the power consumption of laptops or desktop machines, including switching off the hard disk drive or dimming the display when the computer is in idle state, as well as to reduce the CPU’s frequency.

In addition, various actions are supported by modern machines in order to match users’ needs, such as suspend (sleep to RAM), hibernate (sleep to disk), shutdown, and blank screen.

In modern versions of the GNOME desktop environment, users can interact with GNOME Power Manager by accessing the “Power” entry from the Hardware section of the GNOME Control Center application.

From there, you can set the screen brightness, enable the “Dim screen when inactive” option, enable automatic suspend and power off when the computer is not used between 15 minutes and 2 hours, as well as to blank the screen after 1 to 15 minutes of inactivity.

Under the hood

Under the hood, we can report that the application is written in the C programming language and depends on the UPower, D-Bus and libnotify software packages. Keep in mind though, that the latest version of UPower is mandatory.

These days, GNOME Power Manager it deeply integrated into the system menu of the GNOME desktop environment, allowing users to quickly modify screen brightness and view the current charge state of a laptop’s battery.
