Gimmix is one of those tiny and cool programs that open source, lightweight and fast graphical software written in C around the GTK+ toolkit and designed to act as a GUI (Graphical User Interface) front-end for the Music Player Daemon (MPD) program.

Offers an extremely easy to use interface

It provides users with a clean and simple graphical user interface that is extremely easy to use, but feature-rich, offering a pleasant audio experience. It includes both full and compact view modes, a library browser, library search, and a playlist manager for managing mpd playlists.

Additionally, the software provides support for download album cover art from Amazon.com, lyrics from Leoslyrics.com, edit ID3v2 tags, full keyboard control, system tray icon, and notifications.

Getting started with Gimmix

Gimmix can be easily installed from the main software repositories of many modern distributions of Linux or using the source tarball (TAR archive) distributed here on Softoware free of charge.

After installing Gimmix on your GNU/Linux or FreeBSD operating system, you can fire it up from the main menu of your desktop environment. When it opens, you will have to add the details of your MPD server, such as address, port and password (if supported).

Moreover, you can enable the system tray icon, so you can easily interact with the application whenever you want, as well as to enable system tray tooltips. Furthermore, you will have to choose the directory where your music is stored, otherwise the program won’t function properly.

Under the hood

Taking a look under the hood of the Gimmix software, we can notice that the application has been written in the C programming language and uses the cross-platform GTK+ GUI tookit for its graphical user interface. It has been successfully tested on computers supporting either of the 64-bit or 32-bit instruction set architectures.
