Fedora GNOME 3.14 Spin

Fedora GNOME Spin is a freely distributed operating system derived from the Fedora Linux operating system and built around the latest development version of the GNOME desktop environment. The current release is based on Fedora 21 and includes the GNOME 3.14 Beta 1 upstream project.

Supported only on 64-bit hardware platforms

While it is not a bad thing to release a distribution of Linux only for a specific hardware platform, it is not good to distribute it only for the most modern architecture. Fedora GNOME Spin comes as a Live DVD ISO image that contains software packages optimized for the 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architecture.

Boot menu à la Fedora Linux

Being based on Fedora, the project inherits its Live DVD boot menu, which has been designed with usability in mind, allowing the user to start the operating system in live mode without installing anything on his or her computer. In addition, it is possible to perform a system memory test, boot an existing OS from the local drive or run the live system in safe graphics mode.

Pure GNOME 3 desktop experience

As mentioned, this special Fedora GNOME Spin project focuses on the development (unstable) release of the GNOME 3 desktop environment, giving the user a glimpse of what’s coming in the controversial project. It offers a pure GNOME 3 desktop experience, where nothing has been modified in any form or shape.

Includes a great selection of open-source applications

Besides the GNOME-specific software like Totem video player, Rhythmbox music player, Evolution email and calendar client, Gedit text editor, GNOME Boxes virtualization software based on QEMU, Shotwell image viewer and organizer, the distribution include a great selection of open-source applications. Among these, we can mention the LibreOffice office suite, Mozilla Firefox web browser, as well as the Transmission torrent downloader.
