Cyberstorm is an open source distribution of Linux based on the popular openSUSE operating system, built around the modern and controversial GNOME desktop environment, and developed with the help of the SUSE Studio tool.

Distributed as a 32-bit Live DVD

This custom openSUSE distribution is available for download as a single Live DVD ISO image that will support only 32-bit applications. However, it can be used on either a 32-bit (i686) or 64-bit (amd64) computer, as long as you write the ISO image to a DVD disc or a USB thumb drive of 1GB or higher capacity.

Standard boot options à la openSUSE

The boot menu is very basic and standard for an openSUSE based distro. It allows the user to start the live environment with default boot options or in failsafe mode, boot an existing operating system from the local drive, as well as to perform a memory test.

Hackerish desktop environment powered by GNOME

Before you can use the graphical desktop, it is a must to accept the license agreement and wait for the system to configure various functions for the live environment. Then, you must log in using the ‘root’ username and the ‘linux’ password.

Includes an interesting software selection

From the software selection included in this openSUSE-based distribution, it looks like the developer tried to add some of the best open source applications, such as the Blender 3D modeller, digiKam photo viewer and organizer, Mozilla Firefox and Opera web browsers, GIMP image editor, Pidgin IM client, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, and Wireshark network scanner.

Bottom line

In conclusion, the distribution provides a user-friendly desktop interface powered by the beautiful KDE Plasma desktop environment, includes only official software sources, and offers great support. Cyberstorm is considered a clean distro, as it doesn't include custom packages and scripts.
