Cthulhu (formerly Mintbox) is an open source and freely distributed operating system based on the well known Linux Mint distribution and built around the minimal Openbox window manager. It is one of the first unofficial Linux Mint flavors to use Openbox as its default and only desktop environment.

Distributed as a single Live DVD ISO image

The project is available for download via our website or from its homepage as a single, dual-arch Live DVD ISO image or approximately 1.5GB in size, designed to support both 32-bit and 64-bit instruction set architectures.

Boot options

While the Live DVD is designed to boot the live environment in 10 seconds from the moment it is inserted in the CD-ROM or USB port, the user can access the boot menu by pressing any keyboard key during that timeout.

Default boot options include the ability to start the live session with default settings or in compatibiliy mode, perform a system memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive.

Openbox never looked so good

The desktop environment is so minimalistic and beautifully designed that you won't even dare to touch it. However, to access the main menu and launch applications you must right click anywhere on the desktop. Be aware that there's no taskbar, so the only way for you to interact with running apps is to use the traditional ALT+Tab keyboard shorcut.

Includes a powerful suite of applications

Default applications include the Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox web browser, Skype VoIP client, Irssi IRC client, Deluge torrent downloader, FileZilla file transfer client, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, LibreOffice office suite, Pluma text editor, VLC Media Player and Clementine audio player.

In addition, the LXTerminal terminal emulator, Guvcview webcam viewer, Audacity audio editor, LMMS digital audio workstation, Brasero CD/DVD burning software, Viewnior image viewer, GIMP image editor, and Evince document viewer are also included.

Bottom line

Cthulhu’s main goal is to become the most stable, flexible and aesthetic Openbox distribution on the Internet. Therefore, if you're looking of an Openbox edition of Linux Mint, we strongly recommend to download and try Cthulhu today.
