Cinux is an open source operating system built from scratch using the powerful Linux kernel package and designed to be a secure, featureful and intuitive distribution of Linux that offers a familiar and easy to use desktop experience. It is made in Greece!

Distributed as a dual-arch Live CD

The good news is that it is distributed as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image of approximately 400MB in size, which must be written to either a CD disc or a USB flash drive of 512M or higher capacity in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

Minimal boot menu that allows you to quickly boot the live environment

The Live CD’s boot menu is pretty basic and minimal, designed to allow the user to only start the live environment with default boot options and drivers. In addition, it is possible to boot an existing operating system that is installed on the first disk drive.

Uses a traditional and familiar graphical environment powered by GNOME

The distro’s main desktop environment is GNOME 2.30, also known as GNOME Classic, which provides users with a traditional and familiar graphical desktop experience, using a panel/dock layout. While the panel is located on the upper part of the screen, the dock is at the bottom, allowing you to quickly launch you favorite apps.

However, by default users will be dropped to a shell where they must log in using the ‘root’ username without a password. Then you must type the ‘startx’ command to access the graphical session.

Bottom line

Cinux uses GNOME as its default desktop environment, supports the EXT2, EXT3, EXT4, NTFS and NFS filesystems, and it’s powered by a Linux kernel from Pegasus/Rhombus. Future version of Cinux will also support the MIPS architecture, but will include embedded technologies.

What is new in this release:

  • Minor changes were made, including the addition of ALSA and a Linux kernel upgrade to version 3.11.4.
