Apache River is based on the JSK Starter Kit Source and extends Sun's work on the Jini technology.
River lets developers follow classic Jini architectural guidelines and build distributed systems in the form of modular cooperating components and services.
The entire system is content-agnostic, meaning you can use it for anything you want, River handling the architecture underneath your application, responsible for letting different parts of your servers and services talk to each other, not what is said between them.
For talking between the modules, River uses JERI, a custom client-server communications protocol.
