ALT Linux Server is a freely distributable and open source GNU/Linux operating system that does not uses a desktop environment and can only be deployed on server machines.
Distributed as installable-only ISO images
It provides users with the same boot prompt found on the ALT Linux Rescue edition, with the main difference that it can be installed on a local disk drive. It is distributed as two ISO images, one for each of the supported architectures (64-bit and 32-bit).
Boot options
Besides the ability to boot an existing operating system and run a memory test, the boot menu allows users to install the operating system with default settings or in failsafe mode. It's requirements are very low, which means that it supports old hardware platforms.
An interesting feature of this ALT Linux edition is that it also provides users with an interactive rescue CD functionality that runs directly from the boot medium and allows system administrator to recover lost data and rescue broken systems.
Offers a graphical installer
You will be surprised to find out that the installation process of this server flavor of ALT Linux is a graphical one, very similar to the ones found on other editions of this independent Linux distribution forked from Mandrake.
The only difference is on the Volume management screen of the installer, where you will be able to choose between an Office Server, OpenVZ HN Server, KVM HN Server, Terminal/Samba Server, Generic Server, Build Server, or a custom one.
As you’ve probably guessed, after installation there will be no graphical user interface to administer the server. Unfortunately, we can’t tell you how reliable is the ALT Linux Server distribution when deployed in the real world, but you can give it a try today and find out yourselves.
