It's an old-world holiday tradition a colorfully decorated wreath of fresh evergreen cuttings with 4 candles one to be lit on each of the four Sundays leading up to Christmas is shown in this beautiful Christmas screensaver. An open fire in the fireplace serves as a backdrop for a beautifully decorated advent wreath displayed on a table. Following tradition, one candle is lit each Sunday of the Advent season. This makes waiting for Christmas just a little bit easier. The tradition reaches back to the beginning of the 19th century.
A German parson who worked with poor children decorated the first advent wreath with 19 small candles and 4 large ones out of very practical reasons that way the children didn't have to keep asking him how many days until Christmas. They could just look at the number of candles and find out themselves. Each candle represented a day, with the larger candles representing Sundays. Today, we simply use these 4 instead of all 23.
