4MLinux Game Edition is an open source distribution of Linux that provides users with a nice collection of games. It is a minimalistic operating system based on the main edition of the 4MLinux project.

Distributed as a Live CD, engineered for low-end machines

The system has been engineered to run well on low-end machines, therefore it is distributed as a single Live CD ISO image that be used as-is or installed on a disk drive. You can deploy the ISO image to a CD disc or a USB flash drive.

The boot menu of the Live CD presents users with two options, to start the live environment with default options, or with the VESA framebuffer, in case your graphics card is not recognized by the first one.

Getting started with 4MLinux Game Edition

When booting the live environment, users will be asked to enter a password for the root account. After that, you have to use the username root and the password that you’ve chosen in order to login. Once logged in, you have to type the startx command, hitting the Enter key after it, to start the graphical desktop.

This edition looks identical with other 4MLinux flavors. The desktop environment is comprised by the same panel and dock (application launcher), as well as the system monitoring widget powered by Conky.

Default applications

Default applications include the QupZilla and Mozilla Firefox web browsers, Mozilla Thunderbird email client, SeaMonkey all-in-one Internet suite, MPlayer and SMPlayer video players, XPaint digital painting software, and Wine for running Windows apps.

Among the preinstalled games, we can mention LinCity, Zblast, Rocks, WinBoard, Mahjongg, Solitaire, Koules, Galaga, Circus, Liero, Kobo, FZPong, LTris, Quake 1 & 2, Hexen, FreeDoom, Heretic, Abuse, Doom, LMarbles, LPairs, Barrage, LGeneral, as well as LBreakout 1 & 2.

Bottom line

All in all, 4MLinux Game Edition is an interesting Linux distribution for the nostalgic gamer, as well as for older computers. It provides users with the same familiar desktop environment and applications found on other 4MLinux editions.

It is no longer under active development

As of January 24, the developer of the 4MLinux operating system has announced that he will not continue updating the 4MLinux Game Edition distribution. Instead, he urges people to download his brand-new spins of 4MLinux, namely 4MRescueKit, 4MParted, 4MRecover, 4MPlayer, and 4MDoom.
