MathJax uses some nifty little JavaScript hacks to allow developers to build complex mathematical equations and embed them on the page as they would appear on research papers or desktop specific software.

The math syntax itself can be  passed via LaTeX and MathML and will be limited only by the developer's overall math knowledge itself.

MathJax simply removes the user's need to run or load dedicated plugins or complex fonts, running completely under the hood, inside his browser's JS interpreter.
