It was written using Python with MooTools-driven animations.

MediaCore can pull video or audio from any source, track statistics, enable commenting, and provide a high degree of control over the presentation and administration.

Features:

  • Media Publication - MediaCore supports many media formats and allows a site-owner to both publish media from the administrative interface and also to gather user-generated content via the user upload interface. Supported formats include FLV, M4A, MP3 playable via the integrated FlowPlayer.
  • Browse Media - Users can browse media in a YouTube-esque grid fashion. Users can see page views, comments, and how many viewers "liked" a video.
  • Comments and Moderation - The comment engine in MediaCore allows an administrator to moderate user comments and stop spam. Administrators receive email notifications of new comments.
  • Administrative Dashboard - The dashboard allows administrators to see media awaiting review, encoding, and publishing. It provides an overview of comment moderation, and lists recently published media.
  • Podcast Publication - Although tools such as PodPress for Wordpress have made steps to making an Open Source podcast publication platform, MediaCore takes it to a new level. It supports unlimited podcasts in either video or audio format and has RSS feed support for iTunes, and Feedburner.
  • Browse Podcasts - Users can browse podcasts, download media, and add podcasts to iTunes. MediaCore features the latest podcast and archives past podcasts.
  • Unlimited Episodes - Podcasts can contain an unlimited number of episodes in video or audio format. Administrators can specify which files to include in RSS and iTunes output.
  • Tags and Topics - The settings interface allows administrators to manage tags and topics that are displayed to users. Administrators can add, edit, or delete tags and topics from the interface.
  • MediaCore Plays Popular Formats - Support for media playback in a variety of formats including: Youtube videos, Google videos, Vimeo videos, flv, mp4, mp3, m4a and h264.
  • Digital Delivery - Stream files either from your own server or from a service such as Akamai.
  • Video Uploads - Viewers can upload files in any format to MediaCore. Administrators are notified of the new video submission and can easily download the video, handle the encoding themeselves, and then upload the final flv or m4a back to the MediaCore for display.
  • Standards Compliant - 99.9% of the MediaCore codebase is W3C compliant code. A few exceptions were made for grading browser support, in order to make MediaCore functional for a wide audience.
  • Turbogears, Python and MooTools - MediaCore was wrote using the TurboGears Python Framework and MooTools Javascript Framework. We chose these frameworks based on their modularity, excellent libraries, and clean codebases. As a general rule of thumb, we like to keep things simple.

What is new in version 0.9.0:

  • New sexy look and feel for the front-end user experience, and also for the administrative control panel.
  • 35 languages. MediaCore now comes with 35 languages including French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, Finnish, Swedish, Polish, and Thai.
  • Themes. You can customize the look and feel of MediaCore inside the administrative control panel under appearance settings.
  • Plugins. Anyone can now write plug-ins that will enhance the core functionality of MediaCore.
  • Advertising. You can add banner and sidebar advertising throughout MediaCore.
  • SEO Tools. We've added the ability to customize <titles> and add <meta> to every video. It's also possible to customize the major landing pages throughout the CMS.

  • Built-in encoding. We've made it possible to sign up for a PandaStream account to encode video automatically. More details on this will be posted with our final release.
  • Fancy new HTML5 players. We're including the latest versions of JWPlayer (5.4) and Sublime Video right out of the box. They both handle graceful HTML5 to Flash fallback.
  • Video Sitemaps. Every video added to MediaCore is added to a video sitemap XML file, which makes it possible for Google and other search engines to crawl your video and include it in search results easily.
  • RSS Feeds. MediaCore now generates RSS for every category, and for the most recently added media items.
  • Storage Engine API. Video can now be stored anywhere. If there's any CDN you'd like to tie into that we don't support out of the box, you can write a small plugin that enables full support for seamless uploading and playback.
  • Data API. Developers can now use our full JSON API to grab videos and their related metadata for inclusion in other content management systems and sites.
