SIP Inspector is a software written in Java to simulate different SIP messages and scenarios. You can create your own SIP signaling scenarios, customize SIP messages and monitor incoming and outgoing messages. The tool can play RTP streams from a pcap file.

Developer comments

SIP Inspector was conceived sometime in June 2008. The premise behind its creation was there should be a tool easy enough to use and powerful enough to test and troubleshoot various SIP signaling cases. As VoIP is booming, more and more interoperability issues arise. On top of that there are very few good utilities to simulate different problematic scenarios. Working on a SIP as a developer, I mainly used SIPp. A wonderful tool offered by HP. However, the tool is not easy to use. It requires a lot of time and effort to get up to speed. So, I used it as an inspiration to create much simpler tool: SIP Inspector. My goal is to get people working with it in less than couple minutes. It can also be used as a starting point for all those who want to learn a thing or two about SIP.

The tool provides intuitive GUI to create different SIP signaling scenarios. If you are a beginner and really do not know much about SIP, default scenarios are offered for UAC and UAS cases. I recommend first to study them and then to experiment with adding your own messages and commands.

Starting from version 0.7 it is possible to send RTP packets from a captured pcap file. This is extremely beneficial, since it taps into the world of RTP. Therefore using 'SIP Inspector' is a convenient way to test full VoIP. The tool is codec agnostic. It works with any codec, as long as a Wireshark trace has the right content.

What is new in this release:

  • Fixed GUI layouts to work on all supported OSs
  • SIP Inspector main and dialog progress windows can now be resized

What is new in version 1.30:

  • New Features:
  • Scenario supports multiple dialogs. See xfer_referrer.txt scenario in scenarios directory.
  • Added a command to set remote target. Allows users to change destination where SIP messages are sent to.
  • IP address and port scanning functionality. Can be used to discover SIP capable devices.
  • Finally changed the code so all GUI components use MiG layout

What is new in version 1.24:

  • The possibility to automatically increment or decrement injected values was implemented. This can be useful, for example, when you want to register numbers in a range.

What is new in version 1.20:

  • This release includes multi-part SDP bodies, a new "Tools" menu item, and an SDP body calculator/editor. The Remote RTP dialog has been enhanced.
  • It can be used to unconditionally send RTP to a given RTP address:port.
  • "Group RTP Packets" can be used on slower/older machines to fix choppy audio.
  • The '"' sign has been added to mark the end of the line.
  • This release has begun to use the MIG layout, which will hopefully be completed soon.
  • A continuous RTP flag has been added. If enabled, it will play the same RTP pcap file over and over.

What is new in version 1.10:

  • Several bug fixes!

Requirements:

  • Java 2 Standard Edition Runtime Environment
