Intel Media SDK is a software development package that exposes the media acceleration capabilities of Intel platforms for consumer and professional-grade media applications. Developers using the Media SDK don't have to write separate code paths to tap into platform-specific hardware acceleration to improve video performance.

Its single API enables hardware acceleration for fast video transcoding, image processing, and media workflows while helping you tap into Intel Quick Sync Video capabilities. The SDK supports widely adopted codecs MPEG-2, AVC and emerging HEVC, which delivers better compression than legacy standards. Access Intel Quick Sync Video - hardware acceleration in the Intel graphics processor - that runs media processing workflow with outstanding performance.

What is new in this release:

Version 2018:

  • Features that improve video and image processing and quality for AVC, HEVC, and VP9
  • Support for 8th generation Intel Core, Celeron, and Pentium processors
  • Embedded Linux: Includes a validated media stack for building robust solutions
  • Embedded Linux: Enables full access to hardware-accelerated codecs, Intel Quick Sync Video, and processor graphics to speed up performance
  • Windows: New HEVC features: Software- and GPU-accelerated HEVC (H.265) codec components. Sample adaptive offset (SAO) controls improve video quality by providing multiple largest coding unit (LCU) sizes for choosing the luma LCU size and enabling the transform skip mode
  • Windows: New VP9 encoder features: Enables segmentation controls and temporal layer configuration with added external VP9 parameter controls
  • Windows: Video Quality Caliper analysis tool: Provides efficient, sequence-level quality inspection of encoded or decoded video streams plus objective metrics, such as peak signal-to-noise (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM)
