baretorrent is a freely distributed, simple, multiplatform, modern, easy-to-use, and open source graphical BitTorrent client based on the libtorrent-rasterbar library and extendable through plugins. It can be used to download torrent and magnet links from the Internet and dedicated BitTorrent hosting websites.

Features at a glance

Key features include an easy-to-use and informative graphical user interface that gives you details about the currently highlighted torrent, support for system tray area on many desktop environments, support for limiting the download and upload speed, support for limiting the number of connections, proxy support, five different view modes, torrent priority support, pause and resume support, custom actions, as well as support for searching through active and inactive torrents.

A good alternative to existing BitTorrent clients

The application is a very good alternative to some of the most popular BitTorrent applications available today, including uTorrent, Vuze, Deluge or Transmission. It is mature enough to become your default and only BitTorrent client software.

Can be easily extended through plugins

New functionality can be added to baretorrent, as the software can be easily extended through plugins. At the moment, only one extension is available, httpd, which allows users to add torrents straight from a web browser. Plugins are installed via the Tools menu.

Runs on Linux, Windows and Mac

baretorrent has been designed from the ground up to be cross-platform, which means that you can use it on any GNU/Linux distribution, as well as on the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

Under the hood

Looking under the hood of the baretorrent project, we’ve noticed that it has been written entirely in the C++ programming language and that the GTK+ GUI toolkit has been used for its graphical user interface. It currently works on computers supporting either of the 64 and 32-bit CPU architectures.
