OpenEMR is an open source, operating system independent and web-based application written in the PHP server-side programming language and designed to be used as a medical practice management, prescription writing, medical billing, and electronic medical records management application.

Features at a glance

Designed as an open source replacement for commercial medical applications like Medical Manager, Misys and Health Pro, OpenEMR is ONC Complete Ambulatory EHR certified, and features patient demographics, patient scheduling, prescriptions, clinical decision rules, patient portal, reports, security, multi-language support, and a vibrant community.

The OpenEMR project also features support for EDI billing, full-featured calendar with repeating appointments, customizable medical encounter forms, support for HL7 messages, and support for Linux, FreeBSD, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

Getting started with OpenEMR

While the application is distributed as native installers for the Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems, on GNU/Linux systems it is available for download as a universal source tarball in the TAR.GZ format and a native installer for Ubuntu/Debian-based distributions.

The latest stable version of OpenEMR can always be downloaded from Softoware, so make sure that you add the project to your watchlist or bookmark it if you want to stay informed about recent versions.

The tarball includes all the file that you need to get started with OpenEMR and deploy the application on top of your web server, locally or remotely. Therefore, if you use a distribution of Linux that’s not based on the DEB package management system, you must download the TAR archive, save it on your computer, unpack it, open a FTP client and upload all the files to your web server, into a directory.
