Seagull Soup (formerly Birdy) is an open source, multiplatform and freely distributed video game designed as a nice and fun shooter with birds, recommended for all ages. It comes with built-in joystick support for more fun!

A fun side-scrolling shooter

It is an arcade game, a fun side-scrolling shooter where the main character is a seagull armed to the teeth. The player makes use of the arrow buttons to move the seagull up and down or front to back, while it shoots incoming birds with the space key.

Getting started with Seagull Soup

GNU//Linux users must compile the source code in order to install the game on their distributions. Therefore, download the latest release from Softoware using the download button above, save the ZIP archive on your Home directory, and unpack it using an archive manager.

Open a Terminal app, using the ‘cd’ command go to the location where you have extracted the archive file (e.g. cd /home/softoware/seagullsoup) and run the ‘make’ command to build the executable, which can be easily installed with the ‘sudo make install’ command.

Runs in fullscreen or windowed mode

After installation, start the game from the Games section of your desktop environment’s Start Menu. You can start a new game or modify various settings, such as the ability to run Seagull Soup in fullscreen or windowed mode, from the game's main menu.

Under the hood

While taking a closer look at the source code, we’ve noticed that the game has been written entirely in the C programming language, and that it is using the Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL) library for its graphical interface. It is currently supported on 32 and 64-bit hardware platforms.

Runs on GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows OSes

As mentioned at the beginning of the review, Seagull Soup is a cross-platform game, which means that it runs on any GNU/Linux distribution, as well as on Microsoft Windows operating systems. Linux users need to compile the project from scratch (see our getting started section above for details).

Requirements:

  • SDL
