GNOME Sound Recorder is an open source software project that provides GNOME users with a modern and basic application for recording sounds on their desktop environment. The program allows users to record sound directly from their GNOME desktop or laptop computer using the integrated microphone or an external one attached to the sound card.

With its simple and modern user interface, GNOME Sound Recorder will offer a straightforward way to record sound, as well as to play previous recordings. It follows the GNOME HIG (Human Interface Guidelines).

Features at a glance

The application is so simple that it features a single button on the main toolbar, Record. While you know what this button does when it is clicked, the main interface instructs you to use the button to make sound recording.

It can save recordings automatically, storing them in a folder called Recordings, inside your Home directory. It supports multiple audio formats, including OGG (default), FLAC, MP3, MOV, and Opus.

In addition, the software can also be used to create and edit sound for screencasts, create voice memos, code by voice, as well as to voice search your entire GNOME desktop environment.

Getting started with GNOME Sound Recorder

When using the application under the GNOME desktop environment, you can click its panel entry to access the Preferences dialog, from where you can change the preferred audio encoding format, as well as to set the audio and microphone volumes.

Each new recording will appear in the main window, allowing users to play it, as well as to modify its name. Furthermore, you can see its creation and modification date, as well as the audio codec used.

Bottom line

Summing up, if you want a very basic and uncluttered application to record a message or any other sound that you believe it is important for you and your work, you can always rely on the GNOME Sound Recorder software.
