Spot-O-Meter is part of the our product named SpotOff. Spot-O-Meter is being distributed as a stand alone promotion for free to allow users to become aware of our product lines. When Spotlight indexing is intense, it is typically going through the file systems on a users drive and in many cases, indexing every single file it has access to. This can consume considerable amounts of CPU resources and I/O bandwidth. The end result, especially to those unaware that Spotlight is consuming considerable resources, is an apparent slow down, and in severe cases, the end user thinks their system is malfunctioning. We've seen some applications that normally executed in 30 seconds take up to 2 minutes to complete when Spotlight was in full indexing mode. Artifacts of intense Spotlight indexing include very slow web response, slow application loading and execution, and moderate to severe interference with CPU intensive applications, including games. Laptop users may also experience premature battery drain when Spotlight is in its full indexing mode. Spot-O-Meter is part of the SpotOff package but it can be downloaded as a standalone application at no cost to the user. Spot-O-Meter will tell a user when Spotlight indexing is intense enough to possibly interfere with their activities, and SpotOff allows the user to disable it if it is occurring at an inconvenient time.
