hexedit is an open source and completely free command-line software that can be used to view and edit files in both the hexadecimal and ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) format under any GNU/Linux operating system.

How the program works

Three options are provided by the hexedit program, “-s or --sector” for formating the display to have entire sectors, "-m or --maximize" to maximizing the display, and “-h or --help" for viewing the usage message of the software.

To use it, start by running the ‘hexedit --help’ command in the terminal emulator, so you can view the usage message. Basically, you will have to choose one of the aforementioned options followed by the file you want to edit (e.g. hexedit -s softoware).

Because the file is read a piece at a time, it can be a device. Users will be able to modify the file and search through it. The software also features numerous commands, for moving files, as well as to use cut and paste them.

Getting started with hexedit

Installing hexedit on your GNU/Linux distribution is quite an easy task. Start by downloading the latest release, either from Softoware or the project’s homepage (see link at the end of the article). A pre-built binary is available, but only for 32-bit operating systems. If you want to install hexedit on a 64-bit disto, you should download the source package.

Save the source package on your Home directory, extract its contents using an archive manager tool, open a Terminal app and go to the location where you’ve extracted the archive file (e.g. cd /home/softoware/hexedit - replacing ‘softoware’ with your username.

Type the ‘./configure && make’ command to configure and compile the program. After a successful compilation, run the ‘sudo make install’ command to install hexeditor system wide or use directly from the source directory by running the ‘./hexedit’ command.
