DocBook Doclet is an open source and cross-platform graphical software implemented Java and designed from the offset to provide users with a set of utilities for creating DocBook XML documents from both Java source and HTML documentation files.

The application is also useful for those of you who want to generate reference handbooks of your APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), as well as to create class diagrams from Javadoc comments or to convert HTML documents to DocBook files.

Additionally, the DocBook Doclet project comes with a Java Swing application for managing documentation projects, as well as to effortlessly convert DocBook XML files into various formats, including PDF, JavaHelp and PostScript.

Getting started with DocBook Doclet

Installing the DocBook Doclet application on your GNU/Linux computer might be an easy task if your distribution supports either of the DEB or RPM package management systems, as the software is distributed as native installers for these OSes.

Users of other distributions of Linux should download the binary tarball (TAR archive) or grab the source code and compile it. Please note that the latest version of the project works with Java 8 or later.

Under the hood

Taking a look under the hood of DocBook Doclet, we can notice that the application is written entirely in the Java programming language, which means that it supported under any operating system where the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and Java Development Kit (JDK) technologies are available, including all GNU/Linux distributions, as well as the Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows OSes.
