Debox GNU/Linux or Debox Live is an open source operating system based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux distribution and built around the Openbox window manager in order to provide users with a minimal, fast and lightweight computer operating system.

It’s distributed as a dual-arch Live CD

The distro can be downloaded from its official website (see link above) or via Softoware as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image that has approximately 650 MB in size and can be used on computers supporting either of the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures.

The operating system can be used without installing it

There’s only a single option on the Live CD boot menu, the live mode, which will start automatically in three seconds from the moment the user boots the ISO image from the BIOS of a computer using either a CD disc or a USB flash drive. At the login prompt use the root/root username/password combination.

It borrows elements from Kali Linux

Besides Debian, the Debox GNU/Linux distribution also borrows elements from the well known Kali Linux operating system, providing users with a desktop environment uses external programs instead of tightly integrating every component. It also features the Liquorix kernel, as well as support for printers, scanners and bluetooth devices.

Openbox uses the Tint2 panel

As mentioned, the Debox distro uses the minimal Openbox window manager as its default and only graphical desktop environment. Openbox uses the Tint2 panel, which is located on the upper side of the screen and allows users to easily interact with running apps and other system functions. The main menu can be accessed by right clicking anywhere on the desktop.

Comes pre-loaded with lightweight applications

Being designed from the ground up to be as slim and usable as possible, the distribution comes pre-loaded with lightweight applications, such as the Xfe file manager, Midori web browser, Claws Mail email client, AbiWord word processor, VLC Media Player, Audacious audio player and Synaptic Package Manager.
